Week 6

The Glass House — The Glass House | The Glass House

For this week, we were divided into groups and tasked to create a plan and lighting drawing using Johnson’s Glass House as the space.

However, each group was given a different topic/function/use when designing a space using the Glass House; my group was asked to design the plan and lighting plan for a Nursery for children aged between 2-5 years old. My group consisted of Fina, Krithi, Kelly, Charmaine, and myself.

First, to create the plan, we needed to decide what our space would look like. To do this, we used a worksheet that included some adjectives and chose the words that best described what a nursery is and how the atmosphere of a nursery should be portrayed. The words we thought best described a Nursery atmosphere was “fun”, “exciting”, and “cheerful”.

When discussing what we could include as part of the nursery space, we created a list of possible areas to consider, such as:

  • Desks

  • Play area

  • Reading corner

  • kitchen

  • Toilets

  • Quiet area

  • Storage

  • Area for musical instruments

  • Snack area

  • Storage

  • Staff room

  • Coat hanging area

From this list, we then needed to consider and prioritise which facilities and functions would be the most important for a nursery when creating the plan drawing.

After some discussion we decided to include:

  • Play area

  • Area for instruments

  • kitchen

  • Toilets

  • Coat hanging area

  • Learning and drawing tables

  • Reading corner

This can be seen in the plan below.

After we knew the layout of the space, we could then decide on how we wanted the lighting to look.

Plan

The worksheet also included some lighting strategies and a variety of luminaires and lamps. For strategy, we chose task lighting as it would be most suitable because each area of the nursery would be different and have a specific function to it.

Based on the function of our space, we knew we couldn’t use lights that would be considered a hazard to small children; thus, from the luminaires listed, we decided to choose downlights/recessed lights, and for the lamps, we chose warm light because that specific type of light would be gentler on young eyes.

Lighting Plan

After this final activity, we then presented our lighting plan to the rest of the groups without telling everyone what the function of the space we were designing was. This way, the other groups had to guess what the function of our space could be based on the lighting we had chosen for the space alone.

Following this last task, we presented our lighting scheme to the other groups without letting them know what the purpose of the area we were designing was. By doing this, we compelled the other groups to deduce from our choice of lighting alone what the purpose of our area may be. However, we simply gave the other groups a vague explanation of why we selected this particular lighting, such as saying that we avoided using any lights that may be knocked over out of concern for safety.

I had never done this project before, and I found it to be both a pleasant and educational experience because it demonstrated the value of having the right lighting based on the purpose of a particular space.
