Task 2: written research with visuals

Textiles project 2

For my project on structured pattern I have decided to look at mushrooms and mycelium, both of which not only create beautiful organic strictures but also have healing properties which have been used for thousands of years. According to the company RealMushrooms, who advocate using mushrooms for health benefits, many different kinds of fungi have these health benefits; boosting the Immune system, full of antioxidants, are Anti-inflammatory, Helps to manage blood sugar, Support brain health and cognition, Support the nervous system, and Increases energy and stamina.

In an article called Phytomedicine in the Science Direct, they talk about the experiments being done using European mushrooms in modern medicine. Particularly how they can be used to combat tumours, and have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-bacteria properties. Unfortunately, there has been no valid clinical studies done to prove this so mushrooms aren’t being used in modern medicine yet, however they could be a brilliant resource in the future.

For my designs, I will think about the structure of the gills or lamella of mushrooms and their purpose. Which is to spread the spores of the mushroom. The gills create an enlarged surface for the spores to grow on so that they can produce 20% more than if the area was just flat. They also create a strong structure to support the cap of the mushroom which is much wider than the stalks.
