I have started my preliminary research by looking a few textile artists who use three dimensional form within their work.

Alexandra Kehayoglou

Alexandra Kehayoglou, creates these wonderful landscapes, using what looks like rag rug techniques to pull strands of wool through an open weave fabric. what I especially love about her work is that she trims the wool to different lengths which creates a 3D landscape.  The data she has chosen to use for her pieces is a collection of landscapes of places she has visited throughout her life.

The sheer scale of her pieces is mind-blowing, I am so impressed with the amount of hard work and time she must put into all of her artworks. Her colour palettes are so beautiful, and natural looking, it almost looks like it could be real grass, just in miniature form.

I would like to experiment with some of the aspects she incorporates into her work, especially the idea of using different levels of threads to create a 3D form. I would like to work with lots of different colours, to represent different parts of the music I am listening to. It could also be interesting to work with quite a muted palette in general and then to have one or two very bright and vibrant colours that really cut through the pattern/form.

Sheila Hicks

Shiela Hicks creates wonderful large scale pieces of textile art. I love her use of colour, you can tell she is very inspired by cultural textiles from India and Morocco. her pieces are so tactile, I feel like I want to lie down on them, they look firm but also comfortable at the same time. I think that is one of the things I love most about textiles in general is the tactile feeling that you just need to touch this material!

After looking at her work, I am going to really explore colour palettes within my samples, it will be interesting to experiment with how it relates to the form and texture and my data.
