This Year’s School Festival (グループ二 / Group 2)

This second university semester, first-year students were working to hold a Gakuensai festival. Gakuensai means “Campus festival” and it is a normal festival that is celebrated in many universities in Japan. As students of a Japanese language course, we worked to recreate that festival in Edinburgh. In order to achieve celebrating Gakuensai, students were given the opportunity to interview native Japanese students and find out what Gakuensai in their Japanese universities is usually like. Using that information, students then formed their chosen stall idea.

We discussed what types of activities they used to do in traditional Gakuensai in Japanese high schools in the interview. We asked about several activities we know from Japanese films including tarot cards, the student café, and the ghost house. However, our interviewee said that those activities are not popular anymore. Students in Japan only made food for selling and do some performances on stage and exhibit their works of art.

There were all sorts of food stalls, most of them selling baked goods. During the interview, the Japanese students said that yakisoba, crêpes, toffee apples, cotton candy, and so on, were all popular festival foods. However, we found them too difficult to make so we decided to set up a chocolate banana stall instead.

Setting up the chocolate banana stall meant we had to research how to make chocolate bananas. There were lots of Japanese recipes and design ideas. To follow a spooky theme that went along with our tarot stall, some used a ghost design with different cute faces. Our research also showed that it was quite popular to make food that copied pop culture, so we made some that looked like No-Face from the Ghibli movie Spirited away.

Although Tarot Card Stands are not popular at Japanese School Festivals, we decided to give the idea a go. The Tarot Card Stand was really fun to do. A lot of people came, and everyone enjoyed getting their tarot card fortunes read.

In the interview, the Japanese students said that having tarot cards at a Gakuensai was uncommon, but there were other methods of fortune-telling. Picking a fortune out of a box-like at a temple was popular, as a good fortune won you a Japanese snack, but our tarot stall was popular too. I read a lot of fortunes about love and can’t help but think that I would be answering a lot of the same questions in Japan too. Most people love to love.

The school festival gave us a taste of the atmosphere of a Japanese school festival day celebration. Each group prepared products with great care and designed many interesting games. For our group, the most popular item was the tarot card reading. Many people came to our stall to read about life, studies, love, and career, and although our group members were not experts in this area, they spent a lot of time researching and everyone was very happy with the results!
