At my home university, I have never participated in an event like this. In my opinion, it was a really neat experience and a great way for the varying levels to interact, as well as a fun way to learn more about Japanese festivals. Leading up to the festival, we interviewed Japanese students about their gakuensai experiences… I was interested to hear that it is mostly undergraduate students who attend gakuensai. It was also fascinating to learn that drinking sake is common during gakuensai, as it would be very strange to drink during an American university event. The prep for the festival involved a lot of delegation because our group undertook a lot of different tasks. Some students baked goods, some made decorations, and others helped in the set up. I thought everyone did a really wonderful job of communicating and working together! I was glad to have this experience and meet students I may not have had the chance to meet during my semester abroad!
