In the second semester, first-year students worked together in a group to hold a Gakuensai festival. This festival is celebrated in many universities in Japan and it means “Campus festival.” In order to experience this cultural event ourselves, we interviewed Japanese students to find out what this festival is like in their own home universities in Japan, and set up our own stalls according to our research.

Using the information from the interviews, we set up various stalls on our own campus, which was really fun! The stalls set up by the students included karaoke, dancing, alcohol tasting and food stalls which are all popular events done in Gakuensai in Japan. Whilst we couldn’t book celebrity guests or hold a firework festival like some Japanese universities, we did celebrate after with a drink at a bar, which is often done in Japan to celebrate everyone’s hard work. I really enjoyed this year’s Gakuensai in Edinburgh and I’m sure it was just as good as the one in Japan!
