Teaching/Advising

I work and publish on practices related to pedagogy, specifically active learning and ungrading in linguistics.

Change my mind meme, reading: "Coursework should be either self-assessed or skills-based grading. Change my mind"

Here are my LAGB 2024 slides, here’s the recording of a recent talk, here are some slides from an event on ungrading we held in January 2023 (internal link to recording for UoE users), and a here’s a write-up of my colleague rashné limki’s presentation.

At Edinburgh I’m usually Course Organiser and/or an instructor on:

  • LEL2A: Linguistic theory and the structure of English (Semester 1). I am currently working with my colleagues on converting the syntax component of this course to skills-based grading.
  • Morphology (Semester 2). You can find the LAGB 2023 slides about this course here and the materials here. Feel free to get in touch with questions or comments.

In summer 2022 I taught an Introductory Course on The logical form of lexical semantics at ESSLLI.

Here is a blog post that Rebekka Puderbaugh and I contributed to the university’s Teaching Matters blog in August 2022, and here’s one with Charlotte Desvages from September 2024.

If you’d like to apply for a PhD with me (or anyone else at LEL), or if you’d like to apply for a visiting student position, please read this advice first.
