June Careers Month 2026 is almost here! This blog will provide an overview of the key events that the IAD Careers Team have planned for the entire month. During the first week of June we will take a closer look at “Employment Sectors” in a Careers Briefing session. In this 1 hour online session participants will explore how to develop and execute a personalised strategy for exploring career options beyond academia. Eleanor and I will also be offering short 20 minute “Quick Consultations” in person on Wednesday 3rd June. If you have a career issue that you’d like to discuss, are in need of some help getting started with you career planning, or taking actionable steps then this is an excellent opportunity to get started on your career journey!
In week 2 we will be holding our traditional online careers panel session – this year, Meet People Working in Policy. In this one hour session you will get to hear about panel members career trajectories as well as have a chance to ask questions of the panel during the Q&A at the end of the session.
In week 3 the annual PhD Horizons Conference takes place on Wednesday 17th June. If you are considering a role/career beyond academia this is a fantastic event to attend and will really help to kick start your research into other sectors. Research staff are welcome to attend, despite the title of this event is not just for PhD Students! Research Staff and are encouraged to drop in to any session they are interested in – for more information on the day, see the event guide. You will be able to think broadly about your career options beyond academia as well as put your networking skills into practice.
Also in week 3, Eleanor and I will be running an in-person workshop on how to make a Career Pivot. Specifically, we’ll be exploring the personal and professional ‘resources’ that are most helpful when planning a career change.
Finishing up in week 4, Eleanor will be facilitating an online Briefing Session on Networking (potentially useful follow up to the Career Pivot workshop…). This 45 minute session will cover what to consider when approaching networking, key strategies and rules to implement. You will also have a chance to map your own individual network. The session will close with a short Q&A and some final tips for you to takeaway and reflect on.
Come along prepared to ask plenty of questions! Book your slot here: Careers Month 2026
Whilst we have chosen to focus on some specific topics over the next four weeks please be reassured that career planning can happen at anytime and does not need to be limited to the month of June! Darcey and Eleanor will be offering 1:1 Career Consultations throughout the summer.
