The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) provide professional and career development opportunities and resources for staff involved with research and research supervision at all stages of their career.
We are really pleased to announce that the Research Staff, Supervisor and Principal Investigator training programmes are now live and open for booking for Academic Year 2025/26.
Based on evaluation of our previous programmes and your feedback we have updated our programmes and made it easier to see what is coming up for staff. We have created an ‘At a glance events for staff this month’ web page, to display all the workshops coming up in the next month, with our September workshops currently on display.
We also have new infographics for each of our programmes, providing a visual overview of the different support available from each programme, so you can see what opportunities you could engage in depending on your role(s):
Quick overview of our support
Research Staff Programme
The IAD Research Staff programme offers researchers access to a number of Workshops around themes such as professional development, research connections and collaborations, publications, research projects and careers. As part of the career support, we also offer 1:1 career development consultations. The IAD are also aware that researchers are busy and need to be able to access information when they have the time, so we have developed a number of online resources/guides. We also have careers and mentoring resources, and the Mentoring Circles group mentoring programme, to support researchers with their career planning.
There is also resource and support on the University’s Research Staff Hub (RSH), which provides researchers with information on various aspects of conducting research, engaging with the wider research community, and support services. Make sure you visit it, there is lots of useful information to support you in your role.
Support for PGR Supervisors
If you are a research supervisor at the university, you could join our university-wide, cross-disciplinary Community of Practice (CoP). This is an online community for PGR supervisors to connect, share best practice, troubleshoot, build community, and stay informed. There are also a range of supervisor-focused workshops and events available to book to support supervisors in their practice.
Support for Principal Investigators and research leaders
The IAD Principal Investigator programme offers a range of support for research leadership including a bite-size leadership series, cohort-based research leadership development programmes, quick guides for PIs to navigate key information and procedures for your role, and one-to-one support including coaching and leadership development consultations. Whether you are an aspiring, new or experienced research leader you can find tailored support and guidance.
There is lots of support available, for researchers at different careers stages, but if you think anything is missing or have any feedback, please do not hesitate to let us know by emailing iad.researchers@ed.ac.uk with your thoughts and suggestions.
We look forward to welcoming you to our programmes this academic year!
