The GS Team pulled out all the stops to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. We spend much of the working day on Teams – my favourite emoji, the happy Penguin features regularly – the team has been brilliant! I hope you have also found something positive to take out of what has otherwise been a tough year all-round. There is light and hope at the end of the tunnel. Best of luck for 2021. Roll on the vaccine roll out!

Cliff Nangle, Data Linkage Officer

This year I learned that when I’m feeling down it affects the mood of everyone around me, even though I think I’m hiding it, and that trying to work through the accompanying ‘brain fog’ by applying more effort just makes things worse.  Recognising the symptoms of depression, and admitting I was depressed, meant I could get help and I’m happy to say I now once again enjoy going for walks, taking landscape photographs, making the occasional cycling video and working for Generation Scotland.  I hope in these uncertain times you have found something you enjoy doing each day but if you are feeling low please know that you are not alone and help is available.  I wish you a Merry Christmas and here’s to looking forward to a Happy New Year.

Chloe Fawns-Ritchie, Questionnaire Officer

At times it’s been a very challenging year, but I’ve also enjoyed embracing the slower pace of life that 2020 brought with it. A big thank you to all of our participants who took part in Generation Scotland studies this year. Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas. Here’s to 2021!

Ali Forbes, Recruitment Co-ordinator

I started 2020 in Vietnam, then on to New Zealand and am ending it in Edinburgh, somewhere I haven’t lived for 7 years. So it’s safe to say this year has taken some unexpected turns. One thing I’ve really l loved about this period is connecting with Scotland again, making the most of getting up hills and in lochs when I can. I’d like to wish our volunteers and their family a happy and healthy 2021!

Having only joined Generation Scotland in October, it has been an adjustment working from home after my previous role in an NHS laboratory. However, we were very lucky to bring home our little friend, Violet, a few months ago, and she looks after me day to day. I hope all GS volunteers are feeling hopeful for the coming year, and that we all stay well. Warmest wishes for the festive period.

Anna Stevenson, Research Fellow

Finishing off a PhD and starting a new job with Generation Scotland all whilst working from home has certainly been unusual, but the team has been so welcoming and I’m really enjoying analysing the fantastic data that’s been collected. I’d like to thank all our volunteers for contributing to the Generation Scotland studies and hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas.

Charlotte Huggins, Research Fellow

This definitely isn’t how I expected the final year of my PhD to go, but I’ve learned a lot and I’m excited about my new role with Generation Scotland! I hope our volunteers have something new to look forward to over the coming year, and have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Archie Campbell, Chief Technical Officer

2020 has been a difficult year in many ways, but my wife and I managed to move into a lovely new house and garden, which has (almost) made up for not being able to go anywhere else. I’d just like to wish everyone health and happiness in the coming year.

2020 has been a challenging year for our family, with the benefits of spending time together mixed with some real lows. We have lost people we love, (attempted to) balance childcare and work, found it really tough, and generally had to surrender to mild domestic chaos. I’m covering everything in fairy lights this Christmas and hoping there’s a better, brighter and more hopeful 2021 ahead for everyone.

Kirsteen Campbell, Communications & Engagement Officer

Despite the many challenges this year I’m ending it on a high note as a new member of the team. Wishing you all the very best Christmas and New Year.

Robin Flaig, Project Manager

2020 has been an action packed year, yet strangely quiet as we’ve all had to stay at home, nevertheless it has been a privilege working as a part of the Generation Scotland Team as we have responded to the pandemic. I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hogmanay, and I am hoping that 2021 is a much happier year.

Louise Hartley, Research Support Officer

I’m really ready for 2020 to be finished with but it hasn’t all been bad. It’s been a challenging year, for lots of us and in many different ways. Here is to a better 2021 and the exciting new Generation Scotland plans.

Rachel Edwards, Administration and Communication

Working from home has been a challenge this year but I’ve also found some new activities to enjoy. I hope our volunteers have also found some light in their life this year and I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
