ELT Ecotone – A course for digital educators

Created by Katherine Martinkevich as part of the Digital Futures course for the MSc in Digital Education, ‘ELT Ecotone – A course for digital educators’ is meant for digital educators who are interested in the future of education, how it is affected by innovations, especially in technology, and what we can do as teachers, teacher educators or academic managers to prepare for this future.

This OER was completed as part of the Digital Futures for Learning course on the MSc in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh. The Digital Futures for Learning course explored the themes of Interfaces, Visibility and Sustainability in digital technology and the future of learning. This OER focuses on the theme of Sustainability. It focuses on English language teaching and the current technical innovations that affect the lives of ELT specialists, in particular Generative AI and LLMs like ChatGPT. LLMs are viewed from the perspective ‘Interfaces’ as one of the broader course themes; however, it is mostly concerned with change management from the perspective of using improvisation to deal with any potentially disruptive innovations, as described in the ‘Sustainability’ section of the course, especially works by Ankit Kumar about jugaad.

The course is built as a digital version of a ‘Choose Your Adventure’ book and will offer you several pathways; your outcomes and the speed at which you arrive at them will change depending on the choices you make – but do not feel discouraged because you can always retrace your steps and make a different choice.

Katherine Martinkevich is an academic manager of a large teaching centre engaged in English language teaching to adults online via digital means.
