Staying positive through your job search

Are you finding it hard to stay motivated while searching for jobs? Juggling university work and other commitments with job applications is no easy task. Staying positive while doing so, and dealing with rejections – even trickier. We understand. It’s tough. Try to prioritise your wellbeing during your job search, be kind to yourself and seek support if you need it.

We have 5 suggestions which we hope could help with your job search and increase your motivation.

1. Find a great location!

Scrolling through job sites in your bedroom? Have you got any favourite local places you like to hang out, a nice outdoor space, a museum or café perhaps? Switching up your location can make your job search much more enjoyable and productive, and leaving your room to get fresh air always helps.

2. Who are your cheerleaders?

Are there certain people who always make you feel great, who support and believe in you? Speaking to your ‘cheerleaders’ can give you a positive boost, remind you of your strengths and put you in a positive mindset, like a warm career comfort blanket!

3. Time boxing and breaks are great for productivity.

Set yourself a (realistic) goal for the day along with a set time for achieving this. Ticking off achievements can make you feel good, and of course it’s great to celebrate all of the small wins! Creating time and space to pause and re-energise will improve motivation and help prevent burnout. Consider the time of day you work best. A blast of short productivity can work better than a long, drawn-out day with distractions, and leave you feeling much more positive, especially so if combined with your favourite activities.

4. Find communities to connect with, there are loads of great groups out there.

Check out communities and events linked to your industry/ profession of choice. Eventbrite can be good for this, promoting many free local events. Through the right community connections, you can gain useful insights, inspiration, opportunities and even make new friends. It’s good to bear in mind that many roles are filled through professional connections and recommendations.

5. Consider sharing your skills.

Finding opportunities to use your strengths to help others can give you a great confidence boost. Offering informal mentoring or sharing advice can remind you that you have lots to offer. Everyone has something to give, even if it’s just a new perspective.

We wish you all the best with your job search. Remember that the Careers Service is here for you all year round and can help you to improve your applications, hone your interview skills, and expand your professional network.
