We know that many students are interested in careers in Advertising, and Marketing more widely. Two of the industry bodies in this sector – The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, and the Direct Marketing Association – have a few initiatives running at the moment to support students interested in a career in this area.
The IPA Scotland Student Awards 2018 have just launched. This is a great initiative open to any penultimate or final year students – both undergraduates and postgraduates. The brief this year is around creating a campaign to help raise awareness of Hearts & Minds, a Scottish arts-in-health charity. IPA Scotland support students interested in taking part in the competition by hosting workshops to help refine your ideas – the Edinburgh one is on 29th January but you can sign up now. There are cash prizes and paid internships up for grabs.
The DMA Breakthrough Award is similar, also giving students the chance to work on a live brief, this time from Barclaycard. Students are asked to devise a campaign that will raise awareness of the range of contactless payment options on offer from Barclaycard. Again, there are cash prizes and work placements on offer for the winners and entries close on 10th November.
The DMA, in collaboration with its sister body, IDM (Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing) also run a series of Big Book Crits – a chance to have portfolios reviewed by Creative Directors and network with other industry professionals. The Edinburgh event will be held on 1st November.
You can talk to IPA Scotland and the DMA at our Careers Fair this week – IPA are attending on Tuesday and the DMA are attending on Wednesday. If you are interested in a career in Advertising or Marketing more widely, there are a number of other organisations attending the Careers Fair that may be of interest – M&C Saatchi are an obvious one but others like brand consultancy The Value Engineers, Procter & Gamble, Amazon, Kraft Heinz, TK Maxx and Sky all offer opportunities to work in Marketing.
