Creative & Cultural Careers round-up 2

Welcome to the next round-up of creative and cultural careers news from Sharon Cant (Employer Engagement Advisor) and Gina Black (Careers Consultant for Edinburgh College of Art). Here are our latest snippets for those of you interested in Creative and Cultural Career paths:

Absorb

  • This article from Artquest explores using social media and blogs to promote your work as a visual artist. With online social networks becoming increasingly important as platforms for creatives, it’s an interesting and useful read.
  • This podcast from BBC Woman’s Hour gives insight and advice from successful women working in the music industry to other women seeking to break into it. It also features some thought-provoking debate around why there are so many fewer women than men in the industry. (You’ll need to sign up for/log-in with a free account for the BBC to listen).
  • Or if you just want to cut straight to the tips from the women on the podcast, you can read a round-up of their top advice here.

Go

  • We know that a lot of you care deeply about sustainability and the environment. If you’re also interested in either radio production or the fashion industry the launch event of this new student documentary podcast will tick lots of boxes. INDIAscussion follows the textile supply chain through India to China, in conversations with local farmers, businesses, fashion influencers, and international design houses. Discussion and Q&A about the documentary making process will be part of the event, on Thursday 27 February, 6pm, at the Business School. Find out more here.
  • Creative Edinburgh is a supportive network of freelancers, SMEs, start-ups and students in the creative industries, based near ECA at Codebase on Castle Street. Creative Circles is their free, casual monthly meetup for creatives, techies, makers and freelance folk, and they are putting on a special welcome to University of Edinburgh students on 3rd March. It’s a great chance to meet other creatives, share ideas, ask advice or maybe even find your next collaborator! Sharon and I will be heading along, and if you’d like to meet at ECA café and go along together, sign up here. Or if you’re happy to make your own way over, just register directly with Creative Edinburgh here.
  • If your future career might involve freelancing, you should definitely book a place on the Edinburgh Innovations Freelance Workshop, which takes place on Wednesday 11th March, 2-4pm. Edinburgh Innovations can provide support for students and recent graduates working on creative ideas – this could be within advertising, marketing, graphic design, museums, galleries and libraries and more. Find out more here.

Do

  • Got an idea which has the potential to better, energise or help the community? Consider entering HSBC’s Grow your Community competition for a chance to pitch your idea and win £1000. You’ll need to be quick though and submit a brief proposal outlining your idea by 1st
  • It’s never too soon to start looking at job adverts in the creative and cultural industries to get an idea of the skills and experience they ask for. The opportunities section of Creative Scotland can be a good place to start. Use the information to help you reflect on any skills or experience you may want to develop. If you’re unsure what you want to do when you graduate, it’s a good way to start exploring some of the jobs that are out there and the sort of skills employers are looking for.
  • Check MyCareerHub for opportunities too– when I looked today, some that caught my eye included a Production Assistant for TVF Media in London, a Communications Assistant for British dance-theatre company New Adventures, and whole range of roles with Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo.

We hope you’ve found something to spark your interest in this month’s round-up. Follow us on Instagram and we’ll let you know when the next blog post is published @cccf_edinburgh

Thanks for reading,

Gina and Sharon
