Happy Halloween from a Careers Perspective

Thanks to Hannah, one of our Student Engagement Assistants, for this fangtastic blog:

It’s that spooky time of year again… Halloween has arrived and so have those foreboding questions about what you’re going to do with yourself when you graduate. If you’re in your final year, you might be preparing yourself for haunting grad scheme applications and assessment centres. If you’re in your penultimate year of study, you might be shivering at the idea of looking for summer internships and that all-important ‘relevant’ work experience! Or perhaps you’re completely spooked by the prospect of the job hunt and have absolutely no idea where to start.

Whatever situation or mind-set you find yourself in, fear not! The Careers Service is here to support you, no matter what stage you’re at in planning for your career. If you’ve already started going through job application processes, go you! You’re way ahead of the game already. The Careers Service has plenty of resources that might help you out, such as online practice aptitude tests and advice on how to prepare for interviews and assessment centres. We have also recently introduced ‘CV360’, which gives you instant feedback and helps you avoid any ghoulish errors on your CV!

You are also able to book one-to-one appointments via MyCareerHub, with our Careers Consultants who can give you personal feedback on your CV and application, or even have a practice interview with you. Plus, if you’ve got a video or skype interview coming up, you might want to book our skype booth (via the Appointments tab of MyCareerHub) to ensure that you have the peaceful environment you need to stay cool, calm and collected.

·    If you have an inkling about what you might want to do but have no idea where to start, you can look on the school specific- information pages of our website to see what kinds of career paths might suit you according to your subject or areas of interest.

·    You can also have a look at what kind of prep you should be doing according to what year of study you’re in in our ‘Year by Year’ guide.

·    If you’re still unsure about where to begin, you can take one of our careers tests to see where your strengths lie and what kind of area you might enjoy working in.

If you log onto MyCareerHub you can explore all of the different kinds of opportunities available to you, whether that be part time jobs in Edinburgh, grad jobs or volunteering projects abroad. And of course, if you want some more personalised guidance, feel free to book an appointment with one of our Careers Consultants.

If you’re still feeling spooked by all of this, we want to do whatever we can to help! Pop in to see us on the 3rd floor of the Main Library, where one of our Student Engagement Assistants can point you to relevant services or sources of advice including our general advice and information drop-in service – there’s no need to book in advance.

We witch you a happy Halloween.
