Summer 2019

Summer 2019

Hi! It is me again, Yii, your friendly final year vet student!

I will keep my promise to share my recent trip to Italy and Croatia with you. You can probably already expect to see lots of photos about food as I am a foodie. My sister and I visited a few places in Italy, and I would say Rome was probably my  favourite place. Although it is very crowded with tourists during the summer, the architecture and sculptures were truly mesmerising. The vast number of fountains that could be seen in the city was astonishing. You can easily find a fountain to fill up your bottle at every corner. And trust me, nothing tastes better than the icy cold water when it is 35℃ out there. The Colosseum was phenomenal, no words can describe how incredible it looked nor how they managed to build it at a time of no machinery. We had Gelato ice cream almost every day because why not? Hah! My favourite was pistachio. A shop called Gelato Giusto in Milan served the best pistachio ice cream ever! You could really taste the crunchy nut pieces in it which brought out the real and natural taste. It was also very creamy and smooth in texture. I would go back to Milan just to have another cone of it again!

We spent the last few days of our trip in Split, Croatia. The Plitvice Lakes National Park was definitely worth every single penny to visit. You could see fish swimming in the crystal clear water and even your own reflection. It is an UNESCO site with many beautiful waterfalls. The coolest thing about the waterfalls is that they are actually alive. “What?!” – I hear you say. You have not heard me wrong. The tour guide tour told us that the minerals in the lakes will slowly deposit over the year and the waterfalls will then grow and increase in height. That is also the reason why swimming in the lakes in the national park is prohibited. We also spent a day on other islands near Split. I really liked the island called Hvar. The swimming spots and a picturesque village on Hvar were just incredible. It was definitely worth the bumpy boat ride to get there.

I then did two weeks of placement in Veterinary Vision, an ophthalmology referral centre in Penrith after the trip. I really enjoyed my time there. The vets and staff were incredibly helpful and willing to answer all my questions. I never thought I would enjoy looking at eyes before this! I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wishes to see and learn more about eyes. They had many cases in when I was there, so I was very lucky to get to observe many surgeries. I don’t have any photos from the practice, but if anyone is interested to know more about them, you can easily find their website online. There are some articles explaining about common eye conditions in companion animals and videos about ways to perform an ophthalmic examination on their website as well. It is really informative and I would strongly recommend to have a read through it.

Well, this is all from me for now. I hope everyone is having a great summer. See ya!
