PGR Showcase – November 2022

In November 2022, the network presented the inaugural ‘PGR Showcase’: a panel made up of PGRs working in the field of Second World War Studies.

This panel aims to showcase new research on the Second World War currently being undertaken by PGRs and ECRs across the UK. The Showcase consisted of four 15-minute papers, providing a means to present research and share current findings with an engaged audience, with an open floor for questions.

Presenting were:

Hanzhi Dai (University of Edinburgh) – “‘Building New Xikang’: War Efforts and Total-State Experiment in China’s Southwestern Borderland 1939-1945”

Ewan Lawry (Aberystwyth University) – “‘Neville, you must remember that you don’t know anything about foreign affairs’: Sir Austen Chamberlain’s response to the crises of the 1930s”

Gary Willis (University of Bristol) – “Fields into Factories: the Growth of Military-Industrial Capacity and its Contested Impact on Britain’s Landscape Across the Long Second World War, 1936-1946”

The showcase took place on Tuesday 29th November, from 5pm – 6.30pm GMT, on Zoom.
