Puir Bliddy Swaddies: Scottish Poets of World War II

In November 2022, we hosted an evening celebrating Scottish war poetry. ‘Puir Bliddy Swaddies: Scottish Poets of World War II’ took place at 7pm GMT on Monday 14 November at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, 43-45 High Street, Edinburgh. The event was followed by a drinks reception.

The readings, in Scots, Gaelic, and English, showcased the work of poets who fought in the North African and Italian campaigns as well as those that stayed at home, addressing themes of love, mourning, and shared humanity. Poems by Sorley MacLean, George Campbell Hay, Olive Fraser, Edwin Morgan, and Hamish Henderson were performed by Robyn Marsack, Marcas Mac an Tuairneir, and Jim Mackintosh with a live band. The Italian poet Pino Mereu also made a guest appearance.
