RSPB Scotland have been using sheep fleeces as an environmentally-friendly way of restoring paths in a nature reserve in Uist. The fleeces, bought from local crofts, are layered with stones on areas that have been eroded. The wool stops the stones from sinking into the peat and allows water to drain. This method is replacing that of laying plastic membrane beneath the stones. This method has been used previously for fixing paths in the Pentlands. A great way to reduce plastic use – and much nicer to see a bit of fleece sticking out of the ground rather than plastic!
