Pentlands Walk – around Castlelaw and Capelaw Hills

Pentlands Walk – around Castlelaw and Capelaw Hills

I joined Elizabeth (formerly our IT Manager) for a walk in the Pentlands last week.  It’s not an area I’ve explored much, but I have been inspired by Ana and Mitzie’s tales of lovely walks there, and it didn’t disappoint.

We parked at the Flotterstone Information Point next to the Flotterstone Inn and headed in towards the hills.  Last time I walked in the Pentlands, we walked up Scald Law, but we decided to have a gentler walk this time and turned right towards Castlelaw.  There was signage to say that we were heading towards rifle ranges, but fortunately there was nothing happening that day!

After a short gentle climb, we turned off to the left and continued up in the sunshine onto Castlelaw Hill.  Elizabeth and I were so busy catching up on all our news that it was a while before we realised how high we’d climbed and looked back at the amazing views over the surrounding hills.

We followed the track round to the left and picked up a trail that Elizabeth often follows on her mountain bike, round the back of Capelaw Hill.  We were rewarded with great views over Edinburgh and the coast.

The path then started to drop back down until it reached Bonaly Reservoir and on down to Glencorse Reservoir.  We managed to find a nice bench near a waterfall to have our lunch.

It was then just a gentle stroll from there back to the car park.

This was a really gentle walk – no big hills to climb – so perfect for a relaxing day out, with great views for relatively little effort.  We were just out for around three hours altogether.
