Out of Character Project.

Proposal for ‘Out of Character’ Project

Aim to use film, location and sound as main sources of inspiration, we will individually be deciding on all these factors. To show the work and ideas through sketchbooks and to avoid using pre-made image, so that ideas formed are as original as possible. We will consider the symbolism in the materials and film to potentially use for creating the final piece. Each of us will decide on our own individual themes for the final piece. We aim to make the final piece location based with sound incorporated into it.

Explain why you picked those concepts and pick one to focus on as your main inspiration. Consider the process in which the scene is made, the way the location is selected and why or other influences. (You can focus on one aspect to consider all 3!!!) Also keep in mind the materials you use to make your sketch and the symbolism of those materials.

Document the process of your findings and ideas in a sketchbook (i.e. films you may have watched but decided not to use, sketches of locations, compositions, use of materials, sound research, etc) Stay clear from moodboards, focusing on sketches. Consider materials that you are unfamiliar with for quick experimentation or using a familiar material in a different way like for the making of sound for example.

Research: Watch a couple of movies and pick one to use as inspiration, consider the films genre, themes, storyline, aesthetic or character relationships. Take notice of the surroundings in the film and how they influence or inform the scenes you picked. Research artists working with sound, film or interactive processes, Make a series of drawings using concepts from your chosen film that you find interesting. Look into potential locations that might inform your visual research and do a set of drawings from each location. Make connections between the film and the locations you visit.

Development: Consider and take note of possible ideas that can be drawn from the materials, objects or sound you explore to create work. To explore the different concepts you picked out, experiment with sound. Choose a location/s for the final piece and gather things/sounds from that location which you find interesting and may want to include in your development. Using inspiration from your sketches begin to develop ideas for your final piece.

Final piece: Aim to incorporate sound and make an interactive piece in a location of your choosing.
