This week was about referring back to the film to “check in” if the design process was reflecting the film and creating a sense of the film within the space. Part of this process included making a model to get a better understanding of the space and to give a lifelike sense of what the space would feel like.

I began this process by making the wall and entrance to the hotel room, this was a new technique in model making for me and my initial entrance way had a fixed door after consideration this didn’t represent the space well so I created an interactive model where the door could be slid open the same way a visitor would enter the room. After fixing this part of the model I then created some texture in the form of boxes on the outside wall to represent the panelled glass of the corridor within the film, this gave me the idea of having the glass panelled box showing the AI parts as you walk down the corridor. I considered this an aspect which would enhance the guest experience when staying in the hotel and really create a feeling of what it would be like to be AVA on her journey to self discovery.

The next phase was building the rest of the walls of the hotel room and drawing on where items in the room would be, then selecting the view that you would see from the hotel windows. This process gave me a real understanding of the space and I could visualise the concept more clearly. The way the light shone on the model as if the sun was shining through the windows helped create that visual of what it would be like when the sun was shining on the concrete interior and I had a sense that the space definitely has the minimalist attributes about it and the clean lines and sharp edges do give off the feeling of a lab like environment or a place of confinement which is significant of AVA’s home in the house.
