Director’s Post.

Last week,  Lachlan Urquhart, RAD Lab Director, travelled to give a paper at the IRIS Conference from 23-25th February 2023. He was presenting on behalf of the paper team of Ayca Atabey (who led the work) and Burkhard Schafer, both RAD Lab members. The paper was awarded a Lexis Nexis Top 10 of the Conference Award -which was a nice accolade for the work!

The 26th Edition of the Internationalen Rechtsinformatik Symposion was held in Salzburg, Austria. The paper was titled How Do You Solve a Problem Like Alexa? where the team explored the risk based approach to regulating AI in the proposed AI Act, and to what extent it is fit for purpose in dealing with voice based emotion recognition systems, such as those used in Alexa. The presentation is attached (here) for those interested and the paper is now here.

The conference was hosted in Paris Lodron University Salzburg and was a nice opportunity to meet practitioners and academics working in legal tech, AI + Law, and IT Law from Austria, Germany, and beyond. Lachlan also chaired one of the panels on AI and Rights, and did an elevator pitch for the Best Paper session.
