Research into Foreign Aid and Maternal and Child Health Services

Nepal: a rural maternal and child health clinic

New Norms and Forms of Development: Foreign Aid and Maternal and Child Health Services

Professor Pam Smith and Dr Radha Adhikari from Nursing Studies are currently involved in an ethnographic research project with Prof. Ian Harper, and Dr. Jeevan Sharma, from the School of Social and Political Science, UoE. The project entitled “New Norms and Forms of Development: Foreign Aid and Maternal and Child Health Services in Nepal and Malawi” is funded by the ESRC/DFID.

The project began in May 2014 and will finish in April 2016. There are research partner institutions in each country: Social Science Baha in Nepal, Link: http://www.soscbaha.org and the Kamuzu College of Nursing in Malawi.

The study began with two inception workshops, in Kathmandu, Nepal in July 2014  http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/health/nursing-studies/news-events/project-inception-workshop and Lilongwe, Malawi in October 2014.

It has been a really exciting study and lots of fascinating data are emerging around foreign aid channelling mechanisms and issues around Maternal and Child Health services in Nepal and Malawi. We have spent many weeks in the field in each country assisted by our local researchers. We were thankful and relieved that our partners in Nepal were able to carry on with their fieldwork despite the devastating Earthquake in April.

As the study progressed a three-day data analysis workshop was held in Edinburgh in September 25-28, 2015 with all the partners. There are plans to continue fieldwork with the local research partners until Spring 2016.

As of November 2015, we have presented our study findings at three conferences so far. In June this year we participated in the Emotional Geographies conference here in Edinburgh, and a few more tentative presentations are in the pipeline.

We also have plans for a dissemination workshop in each country and several journal articles are expected to be published.
