Stories about Nursing at Edinburgh straight from our staff and students

A New Semester begins through the #nursingstudiesselfie

The 2014-2015 session has begun, and we have welcomed lots of new students into Nursing Studies- a new cohort of undergraduates and many postgraduates beginning courses in both the taught Masters level courses and research programmes.

To illustrate exactly what has been going on within the department over the last few weeks, staff and students have submitted a ‘#nursingstudiesselfie’ for inclusion on the blog and other social media.

For those who don’t know, a ‘selfie’ is a self-portrait photograph which is normally taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone, and staff and students have been happy to get involved!

From social events to different elements of teaching and other academic work, there have been pictures taken across the University and other parts of Edinburgh!

The undergraduates have continued the ‘academic family’ student-led programme.  This involves students meeting up across the 4 years to welcome the new first year students into the Nursing Studies programme. Allowing peer support across the years with grandparents and parents in the senior students, second year students as siblings and the first years as the younger children. The postgraduates across the 4 subject areas in the School of Health in Social Science have also been welcoming students with a variety of social and networking events.

Despite all this social time, the students have been working!  Tutorials have begun, and my second year tutorial group were happy to stop discussions on body image and stigma for a moment to take a #nursingstudiesselfie.  Now back together after the summer holidays these tutorials allow the students to reflect on clinical placements, explore clinical issues and research papers.

We also are lucky to have in the department at the moment Brigitte Groham and Dana Tascherseyer from Germany, who have been spending time across Nursing Studies. They introduced the ‘magic stick’ where the students needed to work together to keep the broom stick up, with the small issue of only being allowed to use one finger each.

It’s not all happening within the walls of the clinical classroom- Sharon, lecturer in Nursing Studies, took a #nursingstudiesselfie before he began his online session for postgraduate distance learners.

Professor Tonks Fawcett also captured the new students as part of the Clinical Decision Making course.  Masters and CPD students in Week 1 are pictured engaging here in their first discussions on the joys and challenges of clinical decision making in nursing practice – and also making new friends!

Thank you to all who submitted and participated in the #nursingstudiesselfie- I hope to share more soon!
