Stories about Nursing at Edinburgh straight from our staff and students

Mia shares her research

A few weeks ago Dr Mia Nelson shared some of her recent research.  This was part of the CRFR  ‘Emotions seminars’ within the University of Edinburgh.  Her presentation was entitled ‘ Tea, Tissues and the room of doom: transitioning to palliative care in paediatric oncology’.

We were offered a fascinating insight to results from her recent study, concerning parents’ perceptions and recollections of their child’s transition to palliative care. Mia elaborated on the theory concerning ‘transition’ and described methodological challenges encountered during the study. Recruitment of families for the study was noted as a major hurdle which the team had to overcome at the first phase of the research.

Mia also reflected and shared quotes from the discussions with bereaved parents and described the impact it had on her as a researcher. The discussion that followed considered issues such as staff training requirements and the impact emotional issues has on those who craft a supporting cradle around families in the paediatric oncology wards.
