Description

The Digos datacubes are a data logger that works with a 3 component geophone.

Power options include:

  • 12V car batteries + solar charge controller + solar panels
    • ~£200 for 120Ah
      • Very heavy at this capacity
    • Solar charge controller ~£100
    • 100W solar panel ~£100
  • Air Alkaline Batteries
    • Will fail if air intake flooded
    • Must be ventilated
    • Very transportable / light
    • 2 x 6V 50Ah lantern/roadsign/agriculture batteries (~£20 each, non-rechargable)
      • Typical dimensions : 66mm (L) x 66mm (W) x 110mm (H)
      • Place in series
      • Lasts upto 4 months with 200Hz sampling on 3 components
      • Easy to source boxes for this type of battery
    • 1 x 9V 165Ah Air alkaline electric fence battery (~£35, non-rechargeable)
      • e.g. P32-165 Hotline 8.4V 165ah Air Alkaline Battery
      • Agricultural suppliers (also equine, but more expensive)
      • Starts discharging when sticky strip across top is removed
      • Wire cutter required for removing plug on cabels
      • Harder to source boxes for this geometry of battery
      • Whitefurze Carry Box with Handles 13 Litre Clear white (£5.99 from Ryman)

Installation Preparation

Documentation to Take

– Print the User Manual
– Print LED Description Document

Equipment

– Digos datacube
– Datacube power cable
– Geophone
– GPS unit
– Power solution
– Electrical cable for connecting batteries
– Electrical terminal strips (connect battery to power cable)
– Laminated card with contact details to go in box
– OPTIONAL: Telemetry box and switching cable
– RECCOMMENDED: USB download cable
– OPTIONAL: USB monitor cable

Toolkit

– Cable ties
– Wirecutter and stripper (for battery)
– Drill with stepped drillbit for cable holes and small drillbit for ventilation holes
– Wood block for drilling on to avoid cracking plastic

Site selection

– Ideally bury geophone ~1-2ft down
– Avoid areas that might flood, particularly if using air alkaline batteries
– Gorse bushes are great for hiding datacube and batteries

Box for datacube and battery

– Ensure box of appropriate dimensions
– For 165Ah Air alkaline reccommend “Whitefurze Carry Box with Handles 13 Litre Clear” from Rymant
– Drill ventilation holes in box (prepare at home)
– Tape over holes in lid where water might run in (prepare at home)
– Drill drainage holes in bottom to drain water (prepare at home)
– Consider painting box brown (prepare at home)

 

Installation Instructions

Service run

– Take download usb cable
– Take spare batteries
– Take spare datacubes
– Consider switching datacubes in wet locations
