Field Kit: Flow measurement
We have woman methods for monitoring fluid flow in rivers. The old school method is to use a flow meter to make point measurements of fluid velocity and the digital age technology of using the acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) which is able to construct cross-sectional fluid profiles in a fairly automated way. The ADCP also allows us to identify movement of the river bed (i.e. when sediment on the bed is being transported) which complements the seismic and hydro acoustic monitoring methods we are developing.
Flow meters
Field Checklist
- Flow meter
- Tape measure
- String to cross bank with markers
- Notebook to record flow measurements
- Some way to understand the water level
ADCP
Pre trip actions:
- Charge ADCP rover and base WITH THE AERIALS ON to avoid damaging!!!
- Charge the laptop
- Charge the lead acid batteries
- Get ADCP batteries
Field Checklist
ADCP
- ADCP box containing: (Mark’s office)
- M9 sensor
- Battery unit
- XXX Batteries for ADCP
- Three-way ‘T’ cable
- Rugged laptop + charger (Bronwyn’s flat)
- ADCP Surfboard (Mark’s office)
- Ropes (Mark’s office)
- Always need one rope (Mark’s office – in the small rope bags)
- If setting up a static line, also need longer ropes, slings, pulleys, grisgris and carabiners (In the big haul sack)
- Tarp to cover battery (Might be in the car?)
- Boat Hook (Mark’s office)
- AA batteries (x16 for ADCP at once). (See Matt Gervais?)
- OPTIONAL: Car battery and inverter for charging laptop in field
Differential GPS
- Tripod
- Tribrach with sighting lens
- Small level
- North GPS base unit + antenna
- Tape measure
- Car battery (at least one)
- North GPS rover unit + antenna
