Weekly Changes – 01/09/2025

No major changes this week, just a selection of minor improvements. Here are the details of the notable changes…

webpic

There is a new option – LCFG_OPTIONS_WEBPIC_GETRES_DRM – that changes how the resolution is found. On any graphical system we should be able to get the maximum configured resolution which – even if larger than current – should give an accurate aspect ratio for nice scaling.

Kernel

Initial support for the 6.14 kernel series is now available in Noble. Note that the current version of openafs will not build for that kernel version.

systemd

The lcfg-systemd package provides a new script – notify-by-email – which can be used for sending email from OnSuccess/OnFailure in timer units. The intent is to get the same kind of emails from systemd timers as you do from cron.

rsyslog

On Informatics managed systems the syslog entries will now use high-precision timestamps when logged locally and also remotely to the central server (using the RSYSLOG_FileFormat format).

The lcfg-rsyslog package provides a new script for purging old logfiles that has been rewritten into Python and is now configurable via command line options. This is probably only used in Informatics

NTP

A few finishing touches have been made to the modernised NTP service support in Ubuntu Noble.

Software

The cracklib-runtime package has been added to the standard desktop package list. This is so that the password strength meter in gnome-disks works properly.

Changes to headers and package lists

Members of the Informatics Computing team can browse all the changes to the headers and package lists.
