Weekly Changes – 17/10/2025

This week sees the release of the 2nd update to Ubuntu Noble so we have a few related changes. Here are the details of all the notable changes…

Ubuntu Noble

The 24.04.2 minor release is now out, see the upstream release notes for full details.

apt

The LCFG apt component now calls the configure method at start of run. This ensures any third party sources files are disabled before attempting to update the cache. See bug#1448 for full details.

The new Keep Current Kernel feature has been reworked to ensure that all the necessary packages are retained (e.g. the various modules packages).

openssh

The openssh client configuration has been badly configured for a long time. This has no impact for most sites, only those wanting to include extra host-specific blocks would notice any problems. The LCFG default resources should now generate files that are much closer to the originals from the Ubuntu packages.

The ChallengeResponseAuthentication option alias is now deprecated, use KbdInteractiveAuthentication instead.

There is new support for specifying client match blocks, this works in the same way as the similar support for the daemon configuration. For example:

!openssh.sshdmatches mADD(inf)
openssh.sshdmatch_pattern_inf Host *.inf.ed.ac.uk
openssh.sshdmatch_opts_inf GSSAPIAuthentication
openssh.sshdmatch_opt_inf_GSSAPIAuthentication yes

Which would create a chunk of configuration in the ssh_config file like this:

Match Host *.inf.ed.ac.uk
  GSSAPIAuthentication yes

Kernel

The Ubuntu Noble INF_TEST kernel has been updated to 6.8.0-53.55.

There is new support for the Ubuntu Noble 6.11.0 HWE kernel series.

nvidia

Support has been added for the new 565 series driver. There is also now support for the Ubuntu Noble 6.11.0 HWE kernel series.

Software

The minor release for Ubuntu Noble has introduced a new version of the Mesa software which has some big changes to the dependencies. That required changes to dependencies for some options and also some postship adjustments.

Rust has been updated from the default 1.75 packages to 1.80 on Ubuntu Noble.
