Weekly Changes – 21/08/2023

Most of the changes this week are related to Informatics servers and lab desktops being upgraded to Jammy. It’s a quiet week for everyone else, here are all the notable changes…

Kernel

The Ubuntu INF_TEST kernel has been updated to 5.15.0-78.85.

Robot Operating System

All DICE Jammy student lab machines now have the Robot Operating System (ROS) packages installed. The version being used is Humble Hawksbill which is a long-term support (LTS) release that will be supported until May 2027. So far the packages installed are ros-humble-desktop and dependencies along with support for Turtlebot3, It is likely that more are still needed.

LCFG schemas

Following on from the recent changes to how we manage LCFG component schemas. The LCFG component defaults packages have been removed from the Informatics LCFG master server. This should, hopefully, make it clearer which source is now being used.

Console Server

The Informatics compatibility version of the conserver package (enabled with the LCFG_OPTIONS_CONSERVER_COMPAT macro) for Ubuntu has been tweaked some more. To allow the use of password authentication, the support for GSSAPI has had to be removed at build time. This makes the package comparable with that from EL7, at some point we might investigate whether we could convert to using GSSAPI. The package has also been patched to use the conserver user rather than conservr, this makes the transition from EL7 much simpler.

The standard conserver port number is now added to the /etc/services file, also TCP Wrappers access is added for all local console servers so they can communicate with each other.

Software

  • LCFG_OPTIONS_COQ_DEV – devel support for Ocaml Coq package
  • LCFG_OPTIONS_GRAPHICSMAGICK_PERL – Perl Graphics::Magick module (note that this conflicts with the libimage-magick-perl package).
