来年の学園祭：

まず、来年の学園祭について話します。その時、コロナがあったから、大きいグループで大学のキャンパスに行けませんでした。そして、オンラインで学園祭をしました。それはちょっと難しかったですが、本当に、新しいやユニークな経験でした。でも、今年の学園祭はもっと楽しかったと思います。この時、伝統的な売店ができました。例えば、みんなは日本の食べ物や飲み物を売ったり、ゲームをしたり、お菓子も売ったりしました。 

Last Year’s Gakuen-Sai:

First, we’ll talk about last year’s Gakuen-Sai. There was the Covid-19 pandemic during that time, so we couldn’t have the Gakuen-Sai in person. Instead, we held it all online. This was a little bit difficult because it was hard to get the rooms and groups working properly, but overall, it was a new and unique experience for all of us. My classmates and I felt that this year’s Gakuen-Sai was a lot more fun. We could interact with each other a lot more than we could online, and it had more of a school-festival feel to it. Also, we could arrange and set up stalls that were like the ones you would find at a Japanese Gakuen-Sai. E.g. people sold Japanese foods and snacks, there were cool mini-games, and people sold homemade bakery treats.

日本人のインタビューから：

日本ではお祭りが地方によって広い違いがあります。例えば、埼玉県と千葉県は自分の特別なお祭りがあって、季節による、どのお祭りが行われるが変わっています。これらは常に大変人気があるそうで、面白い由緒があります。学園祭に関して、いる学生が早稲田のは日本で一番大きいそうだと言っていました。そして、大学で大勢な友達を作りたいなら、最も優しい仕方は学園祭でいろいろなクラブとかサークルとかに入ることだそうです。 

What we Learned from the Interviews with Japanese Students:

In Japan, festivals vary widely depending on the region. Saitama and Chiba prefectures, for example, have their own special festivals and which one that is occurring changes depending on the season. These festivals always seem to be very popular and have a fascinating, long history. In regard to Gakuen-Sai (school festivals), one student said that Waseda’s seems to be the biggest in Japan. And in the case that you want to make many friends at university, it seems that the easiest way is to join various clubs and groups at Gakuen-Sai.

学園祭の用意：

私たちは今年の学園祭のために、たくさんの用意をしました。まず、アダムさんはオンラインからお酒を買いました。買ったお酒は下の写真にあります。次、アラナさんは自分で抹茶のクッキーを作りました。これは、ちょっとむずかしかったですが、皆さんは味がよくできたと思いました。それから、イリナさんは綱のおにぎりを作りました。最後、ジョナサンさんと他の一年生たちは日本のお菓子やゲームのカードを持ってきました。 

Preparations for this Years Gakuen-Sai:

For this year’s Gakuen-Sai, we had to do a lot of preparations. This was to make sure it all when well. Firstly, Adam bought some Japanese sake. These were small 300ml bottles and are represented in the images below. We thought that these would be very popular, so we decided to buy them. Next, Alanah and Irina prepared some homemade and baked goods. Alanah baked some matcha cookies, and Irina made tuna onigiri triangles. They were both worried about the flavours of their foods, but they turned out delicious. Also, Bosco brought along some matcha tea and a kettle. This turned out to be a very unique and good idea. Lastly, Jonathan and the other first years brought some Japanese sweets and cards for the Hiragana game.

今年の学園祭：

2月23日に私は学園祭に参加して、友達と一緒に出店をしました。色々な日本の食べ物と飲み物を売りました。おにぎりとか有名なお茶を売ってましたけど、一番人気だったのはお酒でした。その他に、自分たちが作ったひらがなのゲームも見せました。沢山人が出店に来てくれて凄く嬉しかったです。人が日本食を喜んだり、ニコニコ笑い話をしたりして、本当にいい雰囲気でした。新しい人と話す事も楽しかったです。 

This Year’s Gakuen-Sai:

On February 23rd, I participated in the Gakuen-Sai and ran a booth together with my friends. We sold many Japanese foods and drinks. Although we were selling onigiri and the famous matcha tea, the most popular food/drink was sake alcohol. Additionally, we presented a hiragana word game that we created ourselves. Participants could either pay a fee for the food and drinks, or they could play the Hiragana word in which they created a long Hiragana word to bypass the cost. The Japanese students and teachers found this very easy. I was very grateful that many people came to see our store. With people enjoying the Japanese food and talking and laughing together, the atmosphere was really nice. Arguably, the most fun part was just talking and meeting new people.

学園祭の楽しみは、自分の屋台だけでなく、他の人の屋台を見ることです。昨年は、コロナとオンラインイベントのため、屋台の種類が限られていました。そこで今年は、屋台やゲーム、賞品など、学園祭らしいものを用意しました。今年は、カラオケ、「ジャストダンス」、目隠し風船割り、けん玉、おみくじ、「フック・ア・ダック」がありました。また、お菓子の屋台、どら焼きの屋台、私たちの味見屋台も出店しました。個人的にはけん玉がとても楽しかったのですが、好きな屋台を選ぶのはとても難しいです。

Summary of the other stalls available at Gakuen-Sai:

Part of the fun of Gakuen-Sai is not just creating your own stall but seeing what everyone else’s stalls are about too. Last year we were limited with the sort of stalls we could have due to the event being online, so this year we had more of a classic feeling with food stalls, games, and prizes. This year for games, we had karaoke, just dance, a blindfolded balloon bursting game, kendama, fortune-telling, and hook-a-duck. We also had a sweets stall, a doriyaki stand, and our own taste-testing stall. Personally, I really enjoyed the kendama, but it’s very difficult to choose a favourite stall.
