Successful Career Transitions (June Careers Month)

Following on from our wonderful panel session earlier this week on Tues 17 June, where we heard from:

Dr Helen Cambrook, Senior Study Manager, with Rouken Bio

Dr Alice Guazelli, Clinical Trials Manager, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences

Dr Vivek Santhivel, Synthetic Biologist, Rouken Bio

The audience gained valuable insights into making a successful transition into roles beyond academia. A useful starting point for any transition is Prosper Portal as it can help you to figure out what you want from your career, explore opportunities beyond academia and develop in-demand skills. All three speakers talked about the importance of self reflection and taking control of ones own development. Completing the Prosper Portal “Skills Audit” is a great first step to better identify your current skills set. Come along to our online session next week 25th June to learn more about how to use the Portal for maximum benefit and efficiency. We’ve highlighted it before in previous posts but they also have a great article on “Overcoming Limiting Beliefs”.

Another useful tip is to work on learning to “sell yourself” effectively (something which often doesn’t come naturally to many). This is an issue that commonly arises in my 1:1 Career Development Consultations. It’s often about candidates realising the importance of phrasing and expressing experiences in the context of the reader of the application. Have you created a picture that they understand or visualise? If this is something that you struggle with or would like further advice about then book a 1:1 Career Development Consultation with either myself or Darcey!

Another tip is to talk to your own network to find out what skills you are most valued for and then see if these align with your personal preferences and values. Our panellist’s also highlighted the importance of seeking feedback and support from your networks when making a career transition.

Top Tips:

  1. Research different industry positions and make lists of the transferable skills that you can evidence (this means studying Job Descriptions in detail, which is excellent practice to improve your application style)
  2. Look for placements / internships to gain insight and experience (no this is not just for undergrads it can bring extremely beneficial career insights not to mention contacts! See the IAD dedicated webpages)
  3. Reach out to your network (look for contacts in relevant fields and roles and ask them for their advice)
  4. Start thinking about preparing your CV and bits that you can improve (your main goal is to do this in advance of actually job hunting as this will make you more prepared for the process)
  5. Read the IAD Career Management guide HERE

*Don’t forget to book on for the Prosper Portal: How to guide on 25 June 2025. This promises to be an extremely insightful session!
