Developing Your Career

With autumn weather now firmly in place the new academic year is underway, which can bring with it a renewed sense of purpose, whether that is to further develop your current role or perhaps you are considering a change of direction. Perhaps you are new to the University of Edinburgh and are wondering what resources and support are available to you. In this short post we will highlight some key resources that can assist you in your career planning.

If you are new to research at the University of Edinburgh then a must-read document is the New Staff Career Development Timeline guide. In fact, even if you are not new to the University this guide can help you think about career planning over the length of time left on your research contract and so is a handy starting point.

If you are short on time our infographic handouts and micro workshops can provide some key insights in approximately 5 – 10 mins.

For those interested in finding out about roles outside of academia then a good starting point is to have a look at our Career Case Study section on the IAD website. The Diverse Career Paths blog series is also a really good read if you are looking for some inspiration on what roles are possible after a career in research. A particularly good resource for those interested in career change is Propser Portal. This is because it provides a wealth of resources on key areas such as self-reflection, case studies and sector information and application and interview advice. There is a lot of information available on the website, which is useful for those that like to look into things in more detail but it is still highly accessible to those that only have 10 -15 minutes available for a quick browse.

If you have a longer amount of time to available for research then our Career Management Guide is a good read, providing strategies on how to further your chosen direction. For more in-depth information and discussion book a 1:1 Career Development Consultation with Darcey or Eleanor.
