Recruitment agencies are a potentially effective but often overlooked strand of an effective job hunting strategy, especially in helping bridge the gap in a period of career change and transformation. How?

1. Recruitment agencies can help you finder a broader, more diverse array of options than usual sources of vacancies.  Many specialise in particular sectors so have detailed knowledge of the labour market, as well as employers needs and expectations.
2. Some employers only recruit via agencies.
3. Agencies advertise both temporary and permanent positions.  Temporary opportunities could enable you to gain experience, or try out different sectors/roles/organisations (you still have to be able to successfully carry out any particular role you are aiming for), use it as a stepping stone to gain experience towards more senior roles.  You may also find “temp to perm” roles where the candidate and the employer can gain some experience of each other before committing to a permanent role (typical length 12 weeks, occasionally up to 6 months).
4. Many agencies will support you in the recruitment process through advice about your CV and support for interviews.
