Following our successful inaugural event last year, we are inviting you to a day of online and in-person conversations that embrace research as process.
On 23rd May 2024, we will host our second #ResearcherRealities annual event. If this initiative is new to you: under the umbrella of #ResearcherRealities we seek to provide a platform for conversation among and across the research community about the hows of research. In other words, the nitty gritty comfortable and uncomfortable lived realities of being a researcher.
You said. We did.
Last year’s event featured four online sessions on researcher career journeys; journeys to funding; interdisciplinary collaborations; and being a principal investigator. Speakers generously shared experiences of unsuccess with funding applications or how to navigate precarity as a long-term researcher, among other things. Attendees valued the candour and honesty that speakers brought to the conversations, and particularly appreciated the opportunity to hear from different disciplinary contexts and career stages. We’ve carried this feedback forward for our programme this year in the choice of topics and speakers.
Last year’s attendees pointed out that more time for Q&A and an in-person element would have been valued. We’ve taken that on board and will try different formats this year that allows for more conversation time as well as networking at one in-person event.
3 Conversations
You are warmly invited to attend #ResearcherRealities on 23rd May. The day will feature three 90-minute sessions and ample time for Q&A.
We’ll kick off the day with an online session on Reconciling Research Funding and the Real World where Ewa Luger, Goncalo Dos Reis, Linus Schumacher and Noor Gammoh will share how they maintain their research programme when life gets in the way and how to restore passion for research when it goes away. The session will be chaired by Al Innes from the Edinburgh Research Office.
Our second session will dive into the intricacies of Interdisciplinary Integration. I’ll be joined by Ann Bruce, Isabel Fletcher, Sabine Hoffmann, and Mark Winskel who will join us virtually from a Retreat to provide empirical insights into the challenges of leading and engaging in integration to share lessons learned from dealing with challenges, whether those relate to processes of combining different disciplinary perspectives or bringing together research, policy, and practice.
In the afternoon, you have the opportunity to join Claire Pembleton, from Edinburgh Innovations, for an in-person session on Research Valorisation. Glaire Anderson, Marcus Price and Tom Wishart will share insights about their valorisation activities, what value they seek to create, and how they do it. There’ll be coffee and biscuits afterwards for informal networking.
