Meet the Team: Rachel
Hi, I’m Rachel and I work as the Digital Engagement Officer for Generation Scotland. I look after our website, social media and blogs. I also support our overall communication strategies.
Before joining Generation Scotland, I gained a BSc in marine and freshwater biology. After gaining my degree, I found it hard to find work. I worked as a housekeeper at a local hotel, whilst also volunteering at the natural sciences department in the National Museum of Scotland for a couple of years. Eventually, I went on to work at the National Museum of Scotland as a lab assistant.
Unfortunately, that short term contract didn’t last. I spent a couple of years working in administration for clinical trials, building up different skills. This led me to join Generation Scotland, as an administrator. I found that I quickly took to the science communication and engagement tasks, refreshing the websites and creating new graphics. I learned that I could gain an MSc in science communication and public engagement, at The University of Edinburgh. I’m currently working towards a degree in it now.
This all led to me taking on my current job as Digital Engagement Officer. I really enjoy working in a role that allows me to speak with our volunteers and the general public about science. I’ve always had an interest in science. I love being able to share that enjoyment with others and seeing what they think about our current research. It’s even more interesting to do all this in a constantly changing environment, as scientists and researchers learn more about the COVID-19 pandemic.
Outside of work, I enjoy taking part in lots of activities. In the summers I wakeboard and in the winters I snowboard. Year round, I dance tap and ballet, though our classes have been a little unusual over the last year, with lots of Zoom classes! I also enjoy going for walks, gaming and brewing the occasional beer!
