College Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee is responsible for providing strategic direction for the implementation of the College vision on equality, diversity and inclusion. Chair: Rowena Arshad

Remit and Action Plan

The Committee met for the first time 28 October and is in the process of finalising its remit. The Committee will meet a minimum of three times per academic year. It is in the process of setting up a CAHSS Sharepoint space, to be linked to the University Equality and Diversity webpages. Target date for completion is end of November 2019.

Baseline for all School EDI roles and Committees

A baseline of good practice and draft role descriptor is being drawn up in relation to School EDI roles and Committees to ensure equity and consistency. Each School will be encouraged to enhance the baseline guidance to suit local relevance. Once approved by the Head of College and the Staffing Committee, this will be sent to all Heads of Schools and Directors of Professional Services. Target date for circulation mid-February 2020.

College support for School EDI leads

A Sharepoint space has been set up for School EDI leads to enable networking, sharing of ideas and support. All EDI leads will be offered an annual induction to develop knowledge of relevant policies, latest initiatives within the University and current EDI debates affecting University work. EDI leads will also be offered training and information seminars – eg. How to take forward an effective Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA)?

Action areas for 2019/20

The Committee has identified initial and related action areas, including:

  • To improve representation diversity within staffing (academic and professional services) and student populations
  • To work with the College Head of Internal Communications and EUSA to explore the meaning of equality and respect for members of the CAHSS community
