About Cream of the Slop

Cream of the Slop is a collection of fourteen projects by fourteen people who are asking hard questions about generative AI: what it does, what it costs us now, and what it will cost us in the future.

Cream of the Slop began in a Digital Humanities seminar at the University of Edinburgh, where a group of students was asked to make creative, critical projects designed to expose problems associated with generative AI. Something that could travel beyond the university walls and speak to anyone willing to listen. And so, using the tools of human intelligence: reading closely, thinking critically, and writing carefully, we are attempting to ask our questions loudly, to spark a debate about the real consequences of generative AI. What you are reading is the result of this project.

FAQs

The projects are not peer-reviewed academic papers, but they are grounded in peer-reviewed scholarship. Each individual project page cites its sources, and we have compiled an Annotated Bibliography of peer-reviewed scholarship on the topics that may be useful for further study.
