The Edinburgh Medical School Digital Education Unit is your partner for any project on the intersection of learning, teaching and technology. Here are some recent examples of our projects:

Academic Integrity Package

Academic misconduct can be described as any type of cheating that occurs in relation to an academic exercise. It is any action, intentional or unintentional, that may result in creating an unfair academic advantage for you, or an unfair disadvantage for any other members of the academic community. We developed an interactive package using Articulate Storyline to allow students to explore some of these concepts in greater detail.Academic integrity thumbnail

Peer Assessment

A peer assessment component was integrated into an academic writing assessment in a large second year course to enhance assessment literacy (~260 students: Biomedical Sciences 2). An inclusive approach where students took on the role of assessor to their peers was established using Turnitin PeerMark on Blackboard Learn. Following completion of the course, students were invited to take part in a questionnaire. A poster was submitted to the Learning and Teaching Conference 2021.Conference poster thumbnailClinical Sciences Online Programmes Induction Hub

We helped develop an online induction course in Learn where students are guided through an induction package. It is also used throughout the academic year as a reference point for information about academic and student services, support and University-wide information. This Hub features online workshops and lecturer series that are broadcast throughout the year.CS induction thumbnail

Interactive laboratory practical

The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have resulted in significant challenges to the delivery of laboratory practical teaching (face-to-face). We took advantage of some of the learning technologies already in place, such as canvas for building tests and surveys, and developed a relatively low-resource method to deliver laboratory practicals online. These were carried out while attending a blackboard collaborate session, chaired by an instructor, provided via Learn.

BMTO Library

We used SharePoint to develop a shared file repository, namely, the ‘BMTO Library’, which is a central space where BMS colleagues can upload and share teaching materials and resources across programmes. Some of the benefits of using the BMTO library include the ability to easily submit resources that colleagues can use in their courses, thus preventing duplication of effort, and find up-to-date resources with ease, avoiding the frequent or long exchange of emails.

BMS 1 Group Project – Self and Peer Assessment

After investigating the constraints and affordances of various peer assessment tools (including WebPA and LEARN Self and Peer Assessment) we used the new Turnitin LTI integration (August 2021) to enable peer assessment, self-assessment, and feedback. We used PeerMark to get a report of the average mark students awarded to fellow students, and themselves, and used an excel spreadsheet to calculate the contribution factor and apply it to the mark awarded to the group project to determine students individual marks.
