Many of the blog posts from students have been centred around coming home for the summer and the experiences we are all having at home over the few months. It has been amazing to hear the stories of classmates explore their homes and make new memories.
I have already expressed how wonderful it is to return home to see familiar faces of friends and family, but what has been a nice surprise this time around, is truly exploring the home that I have lived in for my entire life. Having moved away for the year, and having explored Edinburgh and other cities within the UK and Europe, it truly made me appreciate my home town and all that it has to offer.
I find myself wanting to explore new avenues, cafes, and hikes to see and appreciate the place that I call home. I have been fortunate enough to have had some free time to be able to do this, and it has made me not only appreciate my home of Ontario, Canada, but also Edinburgh. I have grown to love Scotland and all of its old treasures, all the while loving my home town more and more. I had always heard of people travelling and it making them feel more at home and comfortable in their own home, and I never fully understood this until this summer.
Growing up, we all think that our home towns are boring and don’t have as much to offer as some other, “more exciting” cities in the world. However, my views have now changed on this front and I will always look forward to returning home and exploring new sites in a place where I thought that I had discovered it all. Even places where we think we have done everything and experienced it all, always offer more surprises when given a fresh look.
