Hi, I’m Jessica and I’m a 3rd year student at the Vet School. Today, I thought I’d take you on a walk around Edinburgh with me. I have found that at the moment with increasing lockdown restrictions it is especially difficult to balance work with taking care of yourself. Taking time in the day to get outside, away from your flat or whichever accommodation you are in, gives you an opportunity to refresh your mind and refocus your thoughts. These are my top 7 places to walk/ run/ cycle or visit in Edinburgh.
1) Holyrood Park – There are so many routes to take in this Royal Park. Obviously, you could head to the top of Arthur’s Seat, which gives you stunning views of the city and is especially invigorating on a windy day, but also walking along the Crags gives you an equally beautiful view without having to climb up so high. If you want a walk or run with less of an incline, then heading around the base of Arthur’s Seat, following the road, allows you to see the park and city from every angle as well. There are also plenty of lochs and small lakes to visit which are especially good for photographing or even just watching the birds.
2) Portobello Beach – Nothing beats walking along the promenade by the beach, and even better that Portobello is within walking/cycling distance of the city centre or just a very short bus ride away. You are also guaranteed to see plenty of enthusiastic dogs out on a walk, which will definitely cheer you up if you are ever in need. If you go on the weekend there is also an incredible hot chocolate van selling the best hot chocolate I think I have ever had!
3) Royal Botanical Gardens – I only visited these gardens for the first time recently and was so surprised I hadn’t been before. There are many different sections and points of interest in the gardens, including the Chinese hillside, rock garden and woodland garden. The atmosphere is so peaceful and it is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Entrance is free but you currently have to book a timed entry slot, so make sure you plan your trip in advance to avoid disappointment as slots do fill up.
4) Blackford Hill – Located near the Kings Buildings, this hill also provides great views of the city, and also of Arthur’s Seat. The Royal Observatory is located here as well which gives the hill some more character. It is definitely a great place to bring a picnic and relax on a sunny day.
5) The Meadows – If you are living centrally and just want a quick breath of fresh air then running, walking or just simply sitting down in the Meadows is perfect. Over the summer months it is the perfect place for a BBQ. However, having such a green space right in the centre of Edinburgh should not be overlooked during other times of the year – it is a nice place to sit and eat your lunch outside (obviously weather permitting). I also like the way there is always a buzz, with people walking through at all times of day.
6) Calton Hill – Another view point of the city, but with its very central location, just off Princes street, you feel involved with the hustle and bustle of the city, unlike the other viewpoints that have more of a natural setting. The monument on top is quite impressive too and is definitely worth a visit.
7) Dean Village and the Water of Leith Walkway – Walking right alongside the water is very calming and Dean Village is especially picturesque. If you go on Sunday, Stockbridge market is also really nearby so you can grab some food and then take a stroll to unwind.
I hope that this provides some inspirational ways to get outdoors and take a break during the day when working from home!
