There is a belief (I’m calling it that because I don’t think it is backed up by anything) that the test of your ability at maths, is your ability to do mental maths. This still exists and where held, affects the way maths is taught and examined.

Where you have the autonomy to choose the way you teach (or design) a course, from whence comes the analysis and critique of your underlying beliefs which shape your choices?
