5. The Organ

Installed in early 1874 by Edinburgh‐based piano tuner/organ builder Frederick Holt. Reputed to have
been the first in a United Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh (and possibly Scotland). It was a 3‐manual 22‐stop pipe organ.

The first public performance took place on 2nd April 1874, when it was played by Frederick Holt and
others.

The organ was rebuilt twice – for the first time in 1885 by Harrison & Harrison of Durham, and then again in 1910 by Ingram & Co of Edinburgh. During the second reconstruction, the number of stops was increased to 24, with a further 2 stops prepared for.

According to the National Pipe Organ Register, the organ was destroyed or broken up in the early 1960s.
