Intervention Development Training

Six Steps in Quality Intervention Development (6SQuID) Training for the Public and Third Sector

Developing interventions that improve population health outcomes can be challenging. Ensuring that resources are well-utilised and interventions are carefully designed is crucial. For many in the public and third sector who are committed to upstream prevention, where the aim is to address problems before they fully emerge, using a robust, evidence-based framework can significantly improve your chances of success.

The Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy (SCPHRP) has developed a powerful tool: The Six Steps to Quality Intervention Development (6SQuID) framework. Co-designed with stakeholders, this framework is practical and easy to implement, guiding practitioners through a clear, structured process to create impactful interventions.

6SQuID helps you create sustainable solutions that can improve the health and social outcomes of people of all ages. The co-designed approach ensures that end-users and key stakeholders are involved in each step, giving the interventions greater relevance and a higher chance of success.

The framework is built around six key steps:

  • Step One: Identify and Define a Problem
Understand the issue you’re trying to change, focusing on specific areas of concern in your organisation, community or area.
  • Step Two: Identify Possible Causes
Explore root causes within your power to address. In upstream prevention, this could mean tackling early-stage issues before they escalate.
  • Step Three: Develop an Outcome-based Road Map
Outline pathways from root causes to desired outcomes, ensuring your intervention has clear short, medium and long-term goals.
  • Step Four: Create an Action Plan
Design the details of your intervention and how they relate to the desired outcomes.
  • Step Five: Plan to Test and Adapt
Test your intervention, remain flexible, and adapt it based on real-life feedback.
  • Step Six: Develop an Evaluation Plan
Plan for evaluation from the beginning. Identify what success looks like, for whom, and under what circumstances.

Training & Resources for the Public and Third Sector

If you’re working in public health or third-sector organisations, there’s an opportunity to gain practical skills through 6SQuID training. Co-created with partners like Public Health Scotland, NHS Lothian, YouthLink Scotland, Cyrenians and YMCA Scotland, the training equips practitioners with the tools to develop interventions that fit within the upstream prevention model, ensuring you’re addressing the right issues before they escalate.

Training resources include:

  • Step-by-Step Guides: Designed for practitioners, outlining how to apply the 6SQuID framework in real-world settings.
  • Tailored Training Sessions: Developed in collaboration with Public Health Scotland and other key partners, these sessions are specifically designed for youth workers to help embed 6SQuID into their everyday practice.

Why Practitioners Should Use 6SQuID

By integrating the 6SQuID framework into your work, you can:

  • Develop interventions that address problems at their root, improving long-term health outcomes.
  • Engage young people in the co-design process, ensuring interventions are relevant and impactful.
