“Living as a creative act” was a three-week project focused on time-based media of an everyday/familiar activity. The project began with collecting three short clips, one using a P.O.V approach, one using a static approach and the third a structural approach. I focused all three of my videos on the familiar task of washing hands, for the POV video I attached my phone to my head, recording down the way as if the viewer is watching from my POV. For the static video, I put my phone inside a plastic bag and filmed through the bag whilst it was in the sink, capturing the angle face up as the water hits the camera. Finally, for my structural video, my phone was attached to the soap and when using the soap dispenser, the camera followed the same movement.

Following this task, we were given the freedom to start creating a short video to do with a familiar task, I started out with the idea of sleep. For this I collected images of many people’s rooms, I was inspired by Tracy Emin’s bed work and the idea of showing a room in a natural state and how this reflects a person.

Collected images:

For the project, I wanted to create an animation that I could relate to my idea of sleep. To do this, I selected a few of the images that I collected and drew them to create an animation called “How Do You Sleep?”

Whilst I enjoyed this topic and the animation I made, I wanted to create something with a deeper meaning. Starting with the idea of sleep, I went into themes of loneliness and solitude as I started to collect video clips in loud social places like bars, clubs and concerts and then very quiet clips like at home, my room, the library and quiet streets. These differentiating clips contrasted well with how the sound changes over the video and it allows the background music to pierce through at different moments. My music choice was “Echo Sax” by Caleb Arradondo, it is a short, instrumental saxophone track which is mostly fast-paced. I believe my music choice and clips work well together and add to the slightly sad themes in the video. After I had finished my video, I had the idea to add writing to some scenes to create a sort of video journal. I did not pressure myself to write perfect poetry for this, instead, I wrote instinctually and fluidly and I believe this exaggerated the themes of loneliness and solitude.

Overall, I think my video turned out well, I enjoyed the filming and editing process and the creative freedom I had when making it.
