DAY 1

Before meeting on set we received the unfortunate news from our Director and DOP that the ECA equipment store had been broken into and we ha to pause shooting until 1pm (when the police were to come and investigate). Fortunately it was found that there was no equipment stolen and we could carry on with the rest of the weeks shooting. However due to the wait, we had to shift everything along and shoot the scene we were meant to on this day to a different one. This meant that I had to change around the schedule and call outs – we had planned to shoot our final scene on the Thursday as a night shoot so I slotted in the scene for this day in the morning of Thursday. Regardless of our issues on this day the HOD’s still came to set this day with the actors so that Louis and I could run some lines with them and start roughly blocking. I think that overall, though it was an annoyance of the delay, the time spent with our actors really enables us to get better takes along the week. We also secured the remaining duffel bags that the design team could not.

DAY 2

After arriving to set at 9:30am I greeted Chris (the pubs manager) and our extras who arrived early to set. The design team had collected the props designed by the graphic designers and passed them over to us. Due to them not wanting to do any set dressing and having no other design elements as Louis provided the costumes, I dismissed them early. We then ran into the issue of the equipment taking a while to get to set so I was then called to the ECA with Maciej (our gaffer) and Macien (our haze machine operator) where we loaded up two XL Ubers with the equipment and got to work on rigging post arrival at location. Whilst our tea, was doing this, I was readjusting the schedule for the day due to our late start. I set up my scheduling in regards to our shot list – ensuring that I gave us longer time for more difficult and ‘perfectionist’ shots such as our first one (where the film opens). As the day went by there was some overruns so I made sure that I had the schedule planning as was keeping our Director and DOP in the know of how much time they had remaining to get the shot done. When breaking for lunch, Louis, Jude and I sat down and worked through the final shots, cutting out any unnecessary ones and limiting our ‘wishlist’ ones so that we could finish in time. I was also doing the joyous job of refilling the pints in shot to where scrip supervisor, Poppy Hobbs, told me to – for continuity.

Post wrapping on set, I then had Maciej go and collect the car from Calum, before so Hana and I ensured that he was insured on it for enough time for him to get it back that evening. I then received a call from Maciej later that night where he explained that the car had broken down and he had to push it into the car park. Due to the battery being dead I made sure to have Poppy bring her car in for the following day as to jump start the other car.

DAY 3

The car park scene was shot this day, where we found how cold one can get whilst on set! We had obviously had the prior issue of the car the previous evening so Poppy luckily got her car to set ready to jump start it when necessary. This day came with many challenges, the first being the issue of warmth. I made sure all layers were transferred around to everyone who needed them and Hana and I looked into getting flasks to set with some hot tea/coffee. Our next issue was, when using the slider, cars kept driving past the shots, so, as the Design team didn’t have any set dressing or any design elements to do, they helped out by stopping cars at the top and bottom of the ramp, and i communicated with them when they could let them go at the end of the shot over WhatsApp. As the day went on I more focussed on helping Louis from behind the camera and gave him and the actors some points to hit when they ‘didn’t look quite right’. We then had the car on for actors between shots so they could warm up in the car. Some time on we had to jump the car but the extremely unfortunate reality hit us that Poppy’s car had now died – so I allocated the runners and myself to different levels of the car park and asked them to stop anyone coming through to ask if they could jump the cars for us. Rowan eventually managed to capture a group of Monk’s attention who were willing to aid us in jump starting the car. From here everything was smooth sailing until wrap for the day.

DAY 4

Today we filmed both the rescheduled scene and the lock up scene. For the walking scene I cut down the crew to the skeleton crew for the walking scene as it was not a big or long one. I collected the duffel bags from the Design team and dismissed them before we began and then began on working through the schedule with Louis and Jude. Unfortunately we had not been signed off with permissions and our Producer was not on set with us so after a lady got rather distressed with us being in the private car park area, we were asked to leave. Louis, Adam and I tried to speak to many different people about it who were very cooperative but unfortunately the car park was owned by a very unhappy man who decided against us using the space. Nonetheless we carried on filming right next to it to keep the backdrop and quickly changed the blocking.

For the night shoot I unfortunately was not able to be on set, and had previously allocated Rowan to step up to AD, due to my inability, however she fell ill on the day and after conversing with the Director, Poppy and Hana seemed to be a good fit to work together as AD. Before they got to set I sent out all the contacts for the location, as this is one that I sourced for us, and reminded the crew to bring the payment for the employee. I also ensured that they had the leather jacket that Lee’s character was wearing as I was in possession of it after the mornings shoot because there was some cracking and fraying in the leather that needed fixing. I unfortunately heard that this shoot did not do very well and a reshoot may be in order.

DAY 5

This day was unfortunately changed last minute as Lee became suddenly unavailable so it was used as a recce for Louis and Jude. I created the call out for the essential crew to go in Poppy’s car.

DAY 6

Our final scheduled day on set was incredibly proactive and enjoyable. Through communicating the previous day with Peter, the owner of the vehicle dismantlers that we were to be filming at, I had arranged him to be on site to let us into the location at two separate times, once to allow crew to enter and again for the actors upon their arrival. I had also arranged car transfers for most of the crew and all of the actors, as established in the call out. This required specific planning for pick up times so we were all to arrive at our correct call times. Once on set Peter decided to entrust us with the keys to the compound to allow us ease when entering and exiting, which came in handy later in the shoot as a trip to the shop became necessary. Throughout the day I adhered to my usual jobs of, creating a comfortable environment for our cast and crew (for instance I set up our food table for everyone to have access to nibbles and their lunch when they were so suited), and I kept the schedule clear and concise with the aid of Louis and Jude (what could be cut and the timings needed to be allocated for each shot), I also aided Louis from behind camera so our takes were as successful as possible. The day went incredibly smoothly, other than the reoccurrence of some no-essential shots being cut, so all we had left to do was to have the owners of the cars that we rented come and collect them. In the hour prior to their arrival I cleaned the cars inside and out to ensure that we were returning them in the same (if not better) conditions to which they arrived to us. After wrapping I had unfortunately found my computer broken, however due to this being after we wrapped it did not affect my role as Assistant Director on the project.
