Week 5 – Design Development
19/2/24
This week I have continued the development of my hotel room design. I have done this in both 2D CAD floor plans as well as in my 3D Sketch-Up model. Since week four I have been focusing on developing the details of my design as well as thinking about the materiality and colours.
Starting in AutoCad I knew I needed to develop the bathroom area of my hotel design. So I made changes to the bathroom sink area. Previously, I had a chair and a plant next to the two sinks however I developed this and changed it to an extended ledge area. I wanted the ledge to act as a place to sit, place clothes or store any extra bathroom products. I thought this worked better than just the chair and the plant because it allowed the bathroom to retain the curved fluid shape it was cocooned in. I thought it was important that the element of the bathroom was fitted and specific to the design. It also made the bathroom look sleeker.
Week 5 Floor plan development:
Sketch-Up 3D View of Bathroom:
I also further developed other areas of the bathroom prioritising the experience of the hotel room. I switched the shower head to a rainfall shower to elevate the shower experience. Making it more modern and glamorous to fit in theme with the movie as well to align with the face I wanted the room to luxurious and high end.
Sketch-Up 3D View of bathroom:
I also spent time thinking about the materiality and the colours in my design. I decided to change the cream tile in the bathroom to a darker brown marble tile this is because I thought the colours worked better and that it fitted with the materials more. I kept the floor a cream marble in order for the space to not become too dark.
I then further developed the bedroom, starting with the bed. I changed the texture and size of the headboard so it didn’t rise all the way to the ceiling of the room. Instead just to the height of the door. This meant it didn’t become too overpowering in the room which worked better. Then adding different bedside lights for a more futuristic look instead of a standard bedside lamp, to fit with the James Bond theme.. This is because I really wanted the bed to reflect somewhere James Bond would sleep and it was important to prioritise the user experience of the room. I also added two overhead chandeliers to the room, one over the sunken sofa and one over the bed. I thought In order to make the room appear grander and more glamorous adding two different chandeliers would be effective.
I then thought about the texture and colour of the seating and sofa space as this is a really key element to the design. I changed the sofa to a slightly darker burnt orange and kept the seats a classic yellow. I wanted the colour palette to really reflect the film so I stuck to different shades of oranges, yellows, browns, greys etc throughout my design.
