Feedback From Beth

  • the presentation is clear, a good length, covers a range of elements of your project and also is self aware in the elements you are unsure about.

  • the topic is playful but also has the possibility for depth and a range of ways of looking at it, there is not yet evidence that you have engaged with a wide range of artistic and curatorial projects on this theme inc the texts I sent and recommended, this would help you project.

  • it is essential at this stage if you are planning an exhibition to find the venue and the artist’s very soon, think about whether this is achievable in person, or would online work? Are there a range of people you could engage, could you do a call out for artists to submit work?

I personally still prefer offline exhibitions, so the venue is the first thing I have to consider. The second is the artist, given the time constraints, the fact that a broad call to artists is a more complex process and that I may need to set up some incentives, so I tend to go for relevant artworks that are already completed and then get in touch with their creators. I will focus on these two key factors in the time to come.

  • the rationale for the show as being related to you getting good feedback last term is unclear and not a solid basis for a curatorial rationale, can you think about why and who this is relevant to and why now?

The reason for the exhibition, which was a process, was not a spur of the moment decision for me and I probably did not express this factor very clearly in the PRESENTATION. The very good feedback I received last term made me realise that I am an emotionally concerned person myself and that the study of love is an interest of mine. The reason why I chose the topic of first love was because I was chatting with one of my elders and he said “First love is a very distant thing for me, the memory is blurred and I can’t remember many details, but I still think it was beautiful.” It woke me up and gave me inspiration, as it seems most people do when they talk about their first love. In life, a good friend of mine is stuck in this relationship right now, but right now she is in a state where it is both painful and hard to give up. I wanted to help her get rid of this negativity, so I asked another friend, and her response was “that’s how it is with first love, it’s not painful once you’ve had more experience in the relationship.” So I wanted to research and present this topic, why is it that first love is always good to remember and what was the process like?

  • how might a range of artists show a range of ways, or could you just work with one or two?

How to build connections between a series of works is something I have to think hard about. My subject matter has a range of characteristics, a number of tags, it is complex, it is emotional, it is a relationship, it is temporal, it is a common experience, it resonates with people and so on. I think I can go through this list of characteristics and sort it out bit by bit. But I think the first important thing to do is to find relevant artworks.

  • Overall this has lots of potential, getting a venue sorted and the artists you want to work with in the next couple of weeks will stand you in good stead
