The curated theme I chose is named๏ผšMemories Of Childhood

1โƒฃ๏ธThe reason for choosing this theme is that I have done a work about family when I studied graphic design as an undergraduate.I know more about art works in this area and I also want to understand and explore the childhood memories of artists from different countries. I think I can learn a lot in this process.

Childhood represents new life and hope, and inspires people to associate positive images. Life is always the source of art, and “childhood” is inseparable from the artist’s personal life experience. Childhood memory, as the beginning of personal aesthetic perception, usually determines the tone and background of the artist’s creation.

โžก๏ธTherefore, I chose “Reminiscence of Childhood” as my curatorial theme, displaying different types of artists’ works of art about recalling childhood. Behind each work is the artist’s happy childhood; there are painful memories suffered by the artist; there are also their childhood The historical background of the war.

2โƒฃ๏ธThe forms of works include (to be updated): illustrations, photography, oil paintings, installations, videos, books…

3โƒฃ๏ธGroup-oriented: open to everyone, mainly for the student group, it is easier to think of my childhood and resonate.

4โƒฃ๏ธlocation๏ผšThere are 30 students in this major who will share the venue with me at the same time, so we need to discuss with the classmates about sharing the venue.
What I need (the specific number depends on the final number of exhibits) tables, walls, places with darker light

Among the talbot rice gallery and eca college, I chose eca college. Reason 1. The space is relatively small, and works can be compact and continuous. 2. The specific location may change. You can choose the corridors on both sides; you can also choose the four corners of the venue, which can satisfy the dark corners.

5โƒฃ๏ธduration๏ผšThe opening time and duration of the exhibition also need to be confirmed in advance, and you need to contact the eca venue for application and other work. The exhibition duration is about 1-3 months. (Exhibition time is subject to change according to the course)

6โƒฃ๏ธcapacity๏ผšAbout 15 people can watch at the venue at the same time (it may change, according to the final total number of exhibits)

7โƒฃ๏ธThe promotion of visual materials is very important, and many viewers will be attracted. A good exhibition needs a series of good promotional accessories, such as posters, tickets, banners, etc.

8โƒฃ๏ธPlatform cooperation, on-site activities, media and talent invitation, etc. Use social media to attract traffic, eg: ins, weibo and so on.Email to get in touch with sponsors for more funding.

  1. Hi Zhiqian, this is a well-preprared presentation that follows a clear structure, well done. Your theme of Memories of Childhood is very interesting. Make sure when you design slides or posts for your Blog, that the key information stands out: I like your use of graphic design skills in your slides but sometimes itโ€™s hard to focus on, for example, the actual artworks you are discussing. Always make sure you caption art with full details (medium, date, artist name, title etc)

L01 You have clearly done a lot of work to research artistic practices: it is great that you present a range of artists, from different countries, working in different mediums. We need to talk about the practicality of being able to curate their work in a live/offline exhibition however: how can you get access to their work? It may be necessary to change the format of your idea, by making it a speculative exhibition in the digital realm, or consider how you can include other more accessible practices.

LO2 You outline the idea of childhood and its significance through the eyes of the artists you have selected. However, it would have been good to see you situate this in relation to other exhibitions that have explored a similar theme, to include quotes from curatorial/art historical/cultural theory writings about childhood. Is childhood the same everywhere, what factors alter it, and can these be used to focus the curatorial theme? It is very good to see that you thought about practical details of your exhibition and use the knowledge you gained from Talbot Rice/James Clegg, well done. 1-3 months is too long for the show, the Sculpture Court is very busy, so likely this will be a 1 day+ exhibition. Good to see you are thinking about the need to work collaboratively on sharing space and developing a programme. Letโ€™s talk about it more in our Week 6 group chat, please come with any questions.

  2. A reminder of the course Learning Outcomes, LO1 and LO2 in the text above
Learning Outcome #1. Research: Identify, engage with, and apply a range of contemporary curatorial methods, practices and theories relevant to the commissioning, production, dissemination and archiving of cultural practices.
Learning Outcome #2: Practice: Working with your peers, commission, produce, disseminate and archive cultural practices, locating your approach in relation to the expanded field of contemporary curatorial theory and practice.
